Hi Eugene Patrick here and I own 2 Hallicrafters triplet stations. #1 is HT 33A, HT 32A, SX 101 Mark 3A and the HT 33B, HT 32B, SX 115. The first station the only one on the air at present because I am still under construction with the HT 32B transmitter. Love both of these stations and as soon as funds are worked up I will be finishing the transmitter 73 for now and I like your site. Also the SX 88k idea sounds like a winner and would like one on my operator bench.

TNX for the site. I have a SX-96 Receiver with manual from ~1954 when I was a student at Lane Tech HS in Chicago.

One day, I went to the Hallicrafters plant. A nice man by the name of Fritze Franke spent an unforgettable hour showing me around.

A few years ago, I won a pair of decade boxes built by Fritze Franke & Associates, Consulting Engineers, 919 Ridge Ct., Evanston, ILL. 60202. Fritz is a SK. I'm happy to have some of his gear as a token of what a great Elmer he was.

I still have a SX-96 & manual that I bought in 1954 when I was attending Lane Tech HS and was first licensed.

At that time, I went to the H factory to see how they were built and was given a tour by Fritz Franke.

A few years ago, I won a hamfest prize of two decade boxes that Fritz built. They're wonderful souveniers to remember a great Elmer.

Nice site. Have an early model SX-9. Got it at a flea market, $15. Case had some surface rust. Several tubes were replaced with minature 9 pin types, and a general mess of the internal wiring. It does receive, not well. It will be a major overhaul. That project will be one after I finish a National NC-183 that needs to be re-capped and re-align. Keep up the good work on these old radios.

On the air in 1966 with my Dad's S-40. It still works. In August bought an SX-115 at a hamfest with WA4ATT on front. I also got an R-48 speaker with it. The audio with the R-48 is fantastic. Listening to hams on 20 SSB, i wish modern radios had that great an audio quality. How come no one has decent audio anymore? in 1966, most of my QSL cards had Hallicrafters, Hammarlund or Heathkit on them all for Ham radio. Why all the "H" words? This was a mystery to me for years.

My first tube radio? Italy, circa 1972, age 16... It was a case-less and speaker-less AA-5 (or something like that: it had tubes and was very small) to which I attached a pair of toy telephone speakers to use as earphones. I survived!! and have been hooked ever since. You capture the spirit and the emotion of why we play with radios: magical objects that make voices and sounds come out of thin air. A silent radio cannot be left as such. Keep up the good work and thanks!

In 1954 I had an S38-D as an SWL. My buddy (later to become K2QWQ) and I found that we could send CW across town using the local oscillators of the S38 "Dog" and his 5R100A Hallicrafters receiver. The 5R100A was just like the S38D w/o the t/r switch and the BFO. We also modulated the local oscillator by connecting audio to the speaker terminals and vibrating the main tuning cap into FM transmission. Finally we got our tickets in 1955. The big "h" has a spot in our hearts.

My first SSB transmitter was a HT-32A. That was a second hand purchase back in July 1972. I still have fond memories of it and the excellent mechanical dial stops!

Can you put a few more transmitters on the site?

I cut my eye teeth on an old SB-40B, as did my brother Evan, KØHYG. He still has that radio, and it still works! My first ever contact was via this radio receiver. I remember my brother and an older ham buddy connecting a Heathkit Q multiplier to it, and I must admit, it worked the first time. It was not mechanically (or electrically) stable and one had to be careful not to jar the operating desk too hard for fear that rare DX would be lost. Thanks for the memories.

My first Hallicrafters was the S-28 or 38... which I got my father to send me in Lausanne, Switzerland where I was a medical student.I got a step-down auto-transformer locally as European mains are 220V 50 Hertz. When I left Lausanne in '53, I sold it to a Swiss Ham who was delighted to get a Hallicrafters and at a good price. In those days $1 USA = 4.28 Swiss Francs. I don't remember what price he bought it for. That was about 50 years ago. .Now I'm 76,

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for putting up this site. Your FAQ was very helpful too.

I purchased your book several weeks ago and was absolutely surprised at the high quality of the content (loads of pictures and great text) and the book itself is made so wonderfully that I know its going to last many generations of collectors to come.

Thanks for having the spark and taking the initiative in documenting the "hallicrafters" experience.

Best Regards

Nice site. I have HT44/SX117/PS150/HA10; HT46/SX146; HT40/S108;

Tried to post wanted - small knobs for HT46 restoration but could find the link to post. Only the link to view ads and rules seem to be on the site.

Just obtained and restored an SX-42, my first Hallicrafters boatanchor. I replaced all of the paper and electrolytic capacitors, and the radio works great on all bands. I also bought your book. It's really great. I wish there were more on restoration. Maybe there's a next edition in your future.

Ah, brings back old times and good memories. I started as a short wave listener in 1952 with the S76, got my ham license in 1954, using a single 6L6, crystal controlled transmitter. In 1957 I got the beautifull, top of the line SX-101MKIII receiver. Along with the Johnson Viking Ranger, I built from kit, these two companions were my pals.

My first comments are not correct. Hi Chuck, nice web site you have.I have been an amateur since 1978. I started off with Heathkit 2036A and HW-101 transceivers. But, before 1978, I am a listener and I use a Hallicrafter receiver Skyrider, with the weight of 43 kilograms. I bought it in the year 1968.This receiver is working, now I am trying to repair the audio amplifier. I modified the BFO (Beat Freq. Oscil.) circuit with a new tube and a new circuit diagram.

In addition to actively using my SX101/HT-37 combo, I design and build vacuum tube radio receivers and transmitters. I feel like I'm "keeping the faith". As far as I'm concerned, radio means tubes. Vacuum tube technology never fully matured before it was abandoned by the mainstream. Thank you for honoring the Hallicrafters tradition.

just brought home a hallicrafters sx101a receiver with r-46b speaker, about a 9+ condition, from an uncle who "inherited" this unit from a friend. works great, with the exception of a little audio "garble"; my uncle (electronic whiz) suggests replacing a capacitor to fix. really like this unit. could use a fork lift/hand truck to move it! so far the sx101a does pretty well. look forward to learning more about hallicrafters gear.

I have been licensed since 1952 and my first receiver was a Hallicrafters S-38C. I was not happy with it so I added a BC-453 190-550 Kc as a Q-5er behind it and used it for several years on CW and AM. I always dreamed of having a Hallicrafters SX-28A that my Elmer had. Thanks for letting me on your site.

Loved your site. Maybe add Hammerlund and Collins to your collection. As a teenager (circe 1949, I dreamt of owning a Hallicrafter. Their designs were so beautiful, it influenced me all during my career, from MIT to many years as an EE. There was a certain elegance and appeal to their products. Who was the industrial designer? Thanks!
